Muscle Car Project Selection Part 1

In this two part series, we will be helping you figure out what vehicle in the Muscle Car genre you will like to have and taylor to your standards:


1. What will you be doing?

We always stress this since most of us have them and some are larger than others. For example, you have a wife and three kids, and everyone wants to participate.
I wouldn't recommend buying a Corvette or a Cobra. The larger body Muscle Cars are perfect for families. Chevelles, GTO's, GTX's, etc. Camaros, Firebirds, Mustangs
are four seat cars, but I wouldn't go any distance with adults in a back seat of one of those. Although not considered "Muscle Cars", older impalas and belairs are very

2. How far are we driving?

Are we doing the cruise nights? Do we go to shows and rallies out of state? Will this be a trailer queen? Just a few things to consider when selecting your car. I must admit,
theres nothing cooler than a blown big block sticking out the hood of a 67 Camaro, but could you stare (and listen) to that thing for three hours on the highway?
This is where modern drivetrains are very popular. Ok, so you want to keep originality, but mix a bit of modern to make it more streetable. Sure no problem. Nothing
wrong with an overdrive transmission in your vehicle. Just keep the original trans in storage and replace it if you choose to sell to recoup all its originality. And best of all, in most
instances, you will not ever know that there was a different trans in the car the whole time.

3. Interior Comfort

A typical Muscle Car does not have many creature comforts like power accessories or air conditioning. And if you can deal with that, thats fine. Many companies sell aftermarket
systems for both. Does this hurt the value of the vehicle? For many, an immediate yes is in order. But for the real world, most people who drive their cars would pay more for these
"creature comforts." People who collect want it the way it the way it came from the factory. Period!

4. Reliability

Do you have a problem (or the time) tuning your vehicle on a regular basis? As this is not the case for most, it is for many. This is where consideration for an aftermarket fuel injection
system may be a smart investment for you, and in some cases, the installation is reversible without any indication it had been modified. No pumping the pedal or flooding out

1957 Chevrolet's No Other Classics Like Them

57' Chevrolet's still moves the heart of many. It could be a 57 Cameo Pickup restored to its original splendor. You may find them restored with the latest and the best of what's new like disk brakes and crate motors with hundreds of horse power. Custom paint jobs to die for are the order for the day.

The beginning of the true American Hot Rod era the icon of the 50's was and still is the cars and trucks built in 1957. Visit any classic car show and you are sure to find one of these classics customized and restored to better than new condition. Ridding in and driving one of these classics is like a dream.

You could buy a 57 Chevrolet in one of three official trim packages available in the day. The standard base trim package was the 150 model. In the next level trim package known as a mid range package with up-graded interior was just a bit nicer and less of the utility grade. The top of the line trim package was the well known Bel-air. There were a few special trim packages produced known as the Delray that came in some of the two door sedans. The short production run limited edition station wagon two door was called the Nomad with Bel-air trim. Collectors desire more so today than back in the 50s because of the fact that is only had two doors instead of four. One other limited model the EL Morocco known as the baby Cadillac was a hand built version that are very rare today.

The popularity of the 57 Chevy's had a lot to do with Chevrolet's new V8 introduced in 1955. It was touted as having 1 horse power per cubic inch for the 283. This gave a big boost to the start of American motorsports history. The Chevy's of the day entering the start of the true muscle car history were always first at the drag strips and number one in circle racing. The small block 283 V8 was and still is today a power package the just could not be beat.

It is kind of funny that Chevrolet was dreaming of some brand new car design for 1957. But what we ended up with was the same thing as the 1955 version but with a few simple changes produced the true classic icon we all know and still love today. The changes were simple with the addition of the famous tailfins and some reshaping of the windshield. The air ducts were also moved to the headlight pods and the look was very distinctive. The look even back in 57 was classic indeed and loved the world over.

The 57 design got the wider front grille and they opted for fourteen inch wheels over the larger fifteen inch wheels to give the new model a wider look and lower stance. The 1957 Bel-air could be purchased with and anodized gold trim for the script and grille which produced a very ritzy look.

A “muscle car” is a term referring to the high performance variety of automobiles. This term usually refers to Australian, South African and American automobile models. It is generally a 2-door mid-sized vehicle with a rear wheel drive. It also has a powerfully large V8 engine and sold at a very low price.


The very first one that came out was produced between 1960s and 1970s. In most cases, the two main purposes of muscle cars are for racing and street use. They are different from GTs and sports cars. These have two seats or 2+2, intended for touring and road racing. These are different from the muscles cars because of the small size, special nature and high cost. There are varied opinions as to whether compacts, high-performance cars as well as pony cars qualify as classic muscle cars.

The country of origin and age of a car determines if it is a classic muscle car or not. The use of the term “muscle car” occurred only after the end of the vehicle’s production. During the time when the production of muscle cars is still at its peak, the American media regard them as “super cars.”

History of American Muscle Cars

Some say that the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 from 1949 was the very first breed of muscle car. It aroused the public interest for its power and speed. It featured a powerful and innovative engine, consequentially America’s very first high-compression overhead valve or V8. This engine is present in the earlier Oldsmobile body. A magazine for muscle cars said that putting a V8 engine in the hood of a typical car and running faster like a sports car belongs to the Oldsmobile.

An inspired mixture of Hemi luxury car trappings and power found in Chrysler’s 1955 C-300 became the newest attraction of NASCAR. This particular model became “America’s Most Powerful Vehicle” due to its 224 kW or 300 horsepower.

The model is also one of the best selling cars of its century. The C-300 has the ability to accelerate from 0 up to 60 miles per hour or 97 kilometers per hour within 9.8 seconds. The car can reach up to 120 miles per hour or 200 kilometers per hour. After two years, another fast car became available in the market. This honor belongs to the Rambler Rebel. As said by Motor Trend, Rambler Rebel is the fastest American sedan.

Muscle cars gained popularity in the 1960s. It happened when major companies such as Plymouth, Chrysler, Ford and Dodge battled in drag racing. The Dodge 1962 Dart Max Wedge, for instance, can run a quarter of a mile drag strip with just 13 seconds. This 1962 Dart Max Wedge can run more than 110 miles per hour or 170 kilometers per hour.

Muscle car productions from other manufacturers such as Pontiac, Chevrolet and Oldsmobile occurred in 1964. Between the years 1964 and 1965, Mopar introduced its 7-liter or 426 cubic inches V8 engine, special trim and sift linkage with shifted transmission. Ford released its Thunderbolts model in the same year.

We still see these vehicles today but the owners seldom use them. They have a second car which they use to go to work everyday. Meanwhile, the muscle car is stored in a safe place in their garage, kept as a collection.

Choosing the Right Tire For Your Rat Rod

When choosing the correct tire for your project, you need to keep in mind a few things:

1. Comfort

Are you doing a lot of driving? If you are, then you might want to keep a taller tire with moderate air pressure. This is no problem for a Rat Rod
or some Muscle Cars. A tire with a wide sidewall has some give to it, giving you a gentle ride . Plus most Rat Rods have fat whitewalls and need
a taller tire to be able to show it off. Smaller sidewalls or "rubber-bands" as they are referred to are hard on comfort and driveability, but are
excellent for handling and are mostly seen on Resto Mods and most Hot Rods. These wheels go from 17" to over 22'.

2. Performance

As we mentioned previously, taller sidewalls do not handle as well as a low profile tire. Most people in Rat Rods are not
exactly tearing up the mountain roads at breakneck speeds. Nor is anyone really thinking about going much
over 65 mph in a jalopy. Most modern Hot Rods and Resto Mods have modern suspension and or air suspension and with
the proper wheel/tire set up can reveal Corvette-like handling.

3. Looks

And most important of all, how will my rust bucket look? Again, as we said before, fat whitewalls are traditional Rat Rod tires. Wrap
them around a set of 14 or 15" steel wheels and you are set. Muscle Cars always look good with the factory wheels. For extreme
originality, some go to the extent of getting the reproduction bias-ply tires. Although not as good as a radial tire, they serve the
purpose, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to invest in some spare wheels with a good radial tire for consistent driving. Modified Muscle Cars
also called Resto Mods are very popular with their use of big wheels, skinny tires. Many wheel companies are offering reproduction
style wheels at a bigger size so as to improve the handling and not sacrifice looks. Hot Rods go to the extreme with large wheel sizes.
These are usually high dollar billet aluminum wheels. Keep in mind, high dollar wheels wear high dollar tires!

1967 Chevy Impala

The Chevy Impala is one of the oldest and longest running vehicles ever to be manufactured. Through its extensive history the car has taken on many roles. What used to be a high end luxury minded car, has in more recent times been turned into a more budget minded family sedan. Current styling is however rather reminiscent of those older days when cars had more unique body curves and accentuations. The 1967 Chevy Impala marked nearly a decade of production, and added to what was becoming a rapidly growing customer base and popularity. Today the model is highly regarded by collectors and enthusiasts.
The '67 model was part of the third generation that was entirely revamped from what was offered for body styling and drive trains of the originals.
While the first decade saw the car being Chevy's most expensive passenger vehicle, pricing and trim levels were reduced starting in '65. The vehicle was still positioned higher in class than most cars of the day. One of the most distinctive features of the Impala is the implementation of 3 sets of taillights. Also available for this year is the fabled SS model known for performance and luxury.
Body styles available with 2 doors include the convertible, coupe and hardtop. Four door models were offered as hardtops, sedans and station wagons. All of these models were redesigned with a more streamlined and sleek body style without all the curves of previous years. The bubble back roof line was a very popular style offered for sport coupes in this year as well. The sport coupe is probably one of the most sought after styles by car collectors after the 1963 model year which has the most favored body style of any Impala ever manufactured.
The engines offered include a 3.8 liter turbo thrift inline 6 cylinder engine (230 cu in), the 4.6 liter Turbo Fire V8 (282 cu in), a 5.4 liter Turbo Fire V8 (327 cu in), a 6.7 liter W-series Turbo Thrust V8 (409 cu in) and finally a 7.0 liter Z11 V8. The standard transmission available on all vehicles was a 3 speed manual. The 3 speed was the only one offered on many of the smaller engines. All of the V8 engines were offered with the standard transmission, along with a choice of a 4 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic, with the automatic coming with a much higher price tag.
While the 1967 Chevy Impala was no longer the most expensive passenger car in the companies lineup, it still came with very impressive interior materials, compartments and accessories. The seats saw increased cushioning and a better selection of fabrics and or leather. Outside of the vehicle more chrome accents were added along the entire length of the vehicle, as well as in front and back. Chrome was also used to house the distinctive set of 3 taillights. SS models used many aluminum parts for the engine, along with its side moldings.
Enthusiasts who are interested in the "coke" body styling that was used for the third generation of the car must consider purchasing a 1967 Chevy Impala. While they were popular back when first produced, there lore and draw have only increased during the nearly half century that has passed, making them one of the most prevalent cars at any classic show or showroom.

How To Create A Cool Rat Rod, Simple And Easy

Now, be sure that you don't confuse them with Hot Rods, which are generally classic hot rods that are pretty and shiny lots of chrome. And don't confuse them with Muscle Cars. You know, camaros, gtos, corvettes, etc, you get the picture.

Rat Rods are your old, rust bucket looking car. It can be very primitive, looking like your typical jalopy. Rat Rods are all custom, built to the owners taste. Some say the more of a rust bucket, the better. Others like flat black paint, large whitewalls and red wheels, with zero chrome. As long as its not shiny, its in the Rat Rod class.

No one can truly tell you how to build it, but we can give you some ideas. You can turn any car into a Rat Rod, but do it with taste. I wouldn't go out into your garage and spray flat black paint on your Lexus, if you know what I mean. Some of the more popular vehicles are 20s, through 50's vehicles. Fords and Chevys are more popular, but dare to be different. Make a statement and build a Hudson or a Metropolitan.
I've read many blogs on "How to build a Rat Rod" and have wondered if any of them have any truth over others. The truth is in fact that many beginners as well as seasoned veterans build these cars and the only "rule" should be, how cool can you make it.
