2009 Mazda Review

Better than its name implies!

There is something about the new Mazda 6 that has automotive writers chirping. Some feel it is a softer, heavier, less dynamic replacement for the original Mazda 6. Others feel it is a Lexus competitor with a discount price-tag. Some even consider the new Mazda 6 a fine Japanese car that pays homage to sharp European cars.

I think they are all right.

The 2009 Mazda 6 is completely different from its older brother.

Weighing between 3,300 and 3,500 lbs, the Mazda 6 is mid-pack on the mid-size car bracket. The Mazda 6 is 193.7 inches in length, which is several inches longer than its predecessor. This is the same territory as larger luxury cars from Lexus, Acura and Mercedes. The Mazda 6’s width at 72.4 inches is in that same ball park. It’s a big car – a very big car compared to the older Mazda 6.

The 170 horsepower 4 cylinder with 5 speed automatic transmission with the 4 cylinder proved a fine combination. The 6 speed manual (only available with the 4 banger) shifts tight while the engagement is positive and sporty. It’s still a heavy, large car, but the 170 horsepower engine proved more than adequate. For a real good time, sample the 3.7 liter, 272 horsepower (269 lbs feet of torque) V6.

Confession time: I have a real soft spot for mid 80s German sport sedans. They were a bit more sport than luxury and still managed to coddle you. I feel that the new Mazda 6 is representative of that image. In fact, it feels a bit European. The leather seats are firm, but comfortable; the chassis is solid, yet responsive. It is a real joy to drive and the comfortable back seat is commodious as is the massive trunk.

Driving through the sweeping turns near Franktown and the fast highway straights going towards Colorado Springs, nothing could upset the balance of the Mazda 6.

What gets me about this car (other than its sumptuous lines) is what you get for the price. Even the base model at just under $20,000 is well equipped. If you lay out a fully loaded price of about $34,000 you will have a Lexus contender on the cheap. No kidding, this car is like a well equipped Luxury car for mild mannered mid-sized car prices.

The 2009 Mazda 6 is a luxurious, spirited, attractive vehicle.

AND it won’t break the bank!
